The Art of Candle Making: Creating Memories Through Scent

Updated: Sep 4

Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion. That's why the aroma of a candle can instantly transport you—maybe to a woodland walk in autumn, a seaside holiday, or your grandmother's kitchen.

When I create a candle, I'm not just blending wax and oils; I'm creating a story. Each scent has its own narrative, evoking feelings and memories that can bring comfort or joy.

The Power of Scent

Scent has a profound impact on our emotions. It can calm us, energise us, or even inspire us. Here are some scents that can evoke specific feelings:

  • Cinnamon and Clove: This combination might remind you of a cosy night in with a mug of mulled wine. The warmth of these spices creates a sense of comfort and nostalgia.

  • Eucalyptus and Lemon: These scents feel fresh and energising, reminiscent of a bright spring morning. They can uplift your mood and invigorate your senses.

  • Amber and Sandalwood: This blend wraps you up in warmth, much like your favourite blanket. It offers a sense of security and relaxation.

Crafting Your Own Candle

Creating your own candles can be a rewarding experience. Here’s a simple guide to get you started.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary materials:

  • Wax (soy, beeswax, or paraffin)

  • Wicks

  • Fragrance oils

  • Containers (jars, tins, or moulds)

  • Double boiler or microwave-safe container

  • Thermometer

  • Stirring utensil

Melting the Wax

Start by melting the wax. If you're using a double boiler, fill the bottom pot with water and place the wax in the top pot. Heat it slowly until the wax is fully melted. If you're using a microwave, heat the wax in short bursts, stirring in between to avoid overheating.

Adding Fragrance

Once the wax is melted, let it cool slightly. The ideal temperature for adding fragrance oils is usually around 60°C (140°F). Stir in your chosen fragrance, ensuring it's well blended. This step is crucial as it determines the scent throw of your candle.

Pouring the Wax

Prepare your containers by securing the wick at the bottom. You can use a bit of melted wax or a wick sticker for this. Once the wax is ready, carefully pour it into the containers. Leave a small amount of wax in the pot for topping off later if needed.

Cooling and Finishing Touches

Allow the candles to cool completely. This may take several hours. If you notice any sinkholes, you can top them off with the reserved wax. Trim the wick to about 1 cm above the wax surface.

Enjoying Your Creation

Once your candles are set, it’s time to enjoy them! Light them during a relaxing evening or use them to set the mood for a gathering. The right scent can enhance any experience, making it memorable.

Conclusion

Candle making is more than just a craft; it's a way to connect with your senses and create lasting memories. Whether you choose to evoke the warmth of cinnamon or the freshness of eucalyptus, each candle tells a story. So, gather your materials and start crafting your own aromatic tales today!
